Waymo & UPS Collaborate On Autonomous Class 8 Trucks

Waymo Via has extended its collaboration with United Parcel Service to test the autonomous freight movement as far as class 8 trucks are concerned.

Waymo has announced that over the next few weeks, the two companies shall be conducting autonomous trial runs by using Waymo Via Class 8 trucks, that would be equipped with a fifth-generation driver.

The pre-runs will take place in Texas, where the driver shall deliver UPS’s North American Air Freight unit, which falls under Fort Worth and Houston.

The trucks will be equipped to operate with two specialists- a software technician to monitor the Waymo driver and a CDL driver.

As per the Waymo team, they hope to gather early data on how the autonomous driving landscape can help increase safety and efficiency and also gauge the data of the autonomous system.

The team adds that as the holiday season is around the corner, the demand for delivery and movement of freight would remain unprecedented, and Waymo Via will help with that.

Waymo has called the collaboration a natural next step post working with UPS on package delivery.
