Plans are underway to convert old CNG buses into electric buses by the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited-PMPML.
As per the official from PMPML, there are around 400 CNG buses that are more than 10 years old. There are plans to convert them into e-buses in a phased manner.
The process for this initiation has already begun, and an expression of interest has been floated for companies possessing expertise when it comes to conversion to electric mode.
The official further elaborated that by taking the services of ARAI- Automotive Research Association of India, the process will start soon. Not only have the prices of petrol and diesel skyrocketed off late, prices of CNG too have increased in the last couple of months.
In the first phase, some CNG-run buses will be converted to e-buses on a trial basis, after which, based on the approval of the board of directors from PMPML, the process will be initiated at full scale, but phase-wise.
As per the estimation, if all goes well, by mid-next year, 25-buses are expected to be converted to electric mode.
