Nine sites have been identified by South Delhi Municipal Corporation to park commercial vehicles at night.
This move comes after the main roads in South Delhi were found congested due to the haphazard parking of heavy vehicles.
The on-street parking sites will be located at prominent stretches that will be near the commercial and residential areas.
It is said that to get permission for this arrangement, officials from SDMC had a meeting with the Joint CP of Traffic.
As per a South Corporation official, the civic body focuses to charge a minimum of Rs. 9900 per month as a parking fee from every commercial vehicle, and the rates shall increase depending upon the vehicle’s size.
The official added that space of 134 trucks and buses have been identified as of now and more such places shall be identified in the future.
There have been frequent complaints coming from the residents of RK Puram and Alaknanda due to the inconvenience caused to them because of the parking of commercial vehicles like trolleys, tempos, and trucks.
After the finalization of project sites, the parking sites will be allocated to parking contractors who will install the necessary infrastructure like CCTV cameras and other safety devices.
As per Anumita Roy Chowdhury, ED, Research & Advocacy, Centre for Science and Environment, the term commercial vehicle is wide and would cover many vehicles which include e-vehicles as well, and hence it will become mandatory to earmark all the sites after understanding the requirements and doing proper demarcation.
