In an extraordinary move, Union Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari, in order to curb road accidents, has pitched for fixed driving hours as far as commercial truck drivers are concerned.
The idea is similar to that of pilots of aircraft. The move will be supported by certain technological innovations as well, such as onboard sleep detection sensors.
The Road Transport and Highways Minister, in a series of tweets, stated that the current driving hours of the commercial truck drivers happen to be erratic and they should be similar to that of pilots.
It would help in reducing fatigue-induced road accidents to a great extent. According to Shri Gadkari, he has already asked officers to work on a policy that will include onboard street detection sensors in commercial vehicles, which will be as per European standards.
Additionally, the minister will be writing to Chief Ministers and District Collectors of various states, asking them to conduct district road committee meetings regularly.
The minister has also directed the National Road Safety Council to meet every couple of months and share their updates.
