During a press conference at the American Trucking Associations’ Technology & Maintenance Council annual meeting at Orlando, Florida, the Level Deck Self-Leveling Decking Beam was shown to the industry for the first time.

The Level Deck may be released and modified by hand from either side of the beam, unlike other captive systems that need operators to go to both ends of the beam and then use a system-specific device to free and modify it.

The beam may be released with a regular dock hook or fifth wheel puller, and no special tool is required.

The Level Deck beam may be moved freely, asymmetrically, and readily up – and – down its tracks by hand once it has been released.

After one side has indeed been set to the proper height, the adjacent half can be pushed up or down and instantly self-levels, locking itself into a horizontal position.

During his tenure with Con-way Freight, a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, Steve Downing, developed the Level Deck Self-Leveling Decking Beam.

Downing statistically explained the benefits of captive decking systems over no decking, load decks, and loose E-beams. However, after implementing captive beam systems across the company’s LTL operations, the company discovered a number of flaws in legacy captive decking technology and set out to fix them.
